The sun shined brightly on the very successful  5th annual  St. Cronan’s Day Pilgrim/ Friendship walk organised by a small committee comprising of Adrian Hewson, Andrew Walsh, Margaret Ryan and Joan Murray.  The theme of this years’ walk was ‘Anniversaries’, remembering groups  such as the Chamber of Commerce who celebrate their 50th year in Roscrea this year and have contributed to the life of the community in the tradition of St. Cronan.

Beginning at the Methodist church Rev Brian Griffin welcomed everyone into the beautiful church, while his wife Eirene led  the congregation on the organ in singing  the hymn ‘All people that on earth do dwell’. Sadly we wished Brian and Eirene farewell as Brian retires from his ministry and they leave Roscrea later this year.

The walk then proceeded to St. Cronan’s National School, Rosemount, who also celebrate their 40th anniversary this year and on which St. Cronan’s monastic lands the Book of Dimma was written in the 7th century. We acknowledged all those associated with education in Roscrea including the various religious orders, technical schools, hedge schools and primary schools, a tradition which can be traced back to St. Cronan’s time. In the heat of the summer sun, images from the book of Dimma were presented to representatives of the local denominations within the town.

The walk then proceeded via the Knock road to Kennedy park, celebrating  their  50th year  and has been home to many people now for half a century. Dom Richard Purcell ocso led the prayers while children from Kennedy Park led those gathered in prayers of thanksgiving and hope.

The walk concluded at St. Cronan’s Services, Grange by kind invitation of Patsy King and Mary Smith. It was here that the specially designed souvenir bookmarks were blessed and we all sang ‘Bind us together Lord’ led by Dom Richard Purcell ocso.

We would especially like to thank all the staff and clients of St. Cronan’s Services, Grange who treated all the walkers to the finest cup of Roscrea hospitality and refreshments setting the bar for future walks. It was a very successful and memorable day for all.
